Fall, a poem by bob

Fall is here for real, eh?  I guess I was in denial for a bit, still thinking the weather might turn hot again and I might get to go swimming just one more time.  But I'm crossing over into acceptance of autumn.  The pups have been wearing jackets and sweaters; I got a little bit excited and sentimental over a holiday display at Michael's this weekend; Bob had hot cocoa with his bedtime snack tonight.

A day taking care of these precious little ones can be draining.  In every way.  Toddlers can be frustrating.  You spend all of your time and energy taking care of this little person whom you love more than anything on the planet, acting selflessly and loving on him constantly, feeding him and clothing him and playing with him and taking him on adventures -- and then he acts like a total brat and it makes you feel like throwing in the towel.

But you have to remember...  He's two.  He has feelings just like we all do.  He's still learning how to respond to those feelings.  The hour was creeping close to 1pm -- way past lunchtime and clearly into what should have been nap time...

So, yeah.  Super frustrating when pup throws a big fit in Barnes and Noble because you won't buy him some kind of book gift set including a must-have mini batman flashlight.  Frustrating and embarrassing and a tiny bit frightening and depressing.  But also -- it happens.  To the best of us, to the worst of us.  It's my job to keep cool when little pup can't; to show him how I react when things don't go my way; to love him even when he's tired and hungry and suffering from a case of the gimmies.

And, the point of all that was to say, I'm tired.  And I don't feel much like writing.  But I was thinking about fall and I remembered a poem Bobby wrote last year.  Well, I compiled some of his almost-two-year-old observations/early sentences into a poem.  I dug it up; here it is.

What's that sound, Mommy?
I see leaves falling down.
It's not too hot.  It's not too cold.
It's pretty bit warm outside.
I sure do love pumpkins.

No photos tonight; I'm too tired.  I'll sneak something fall-ish in tomorrow.

Update: as promised, the pics...

a weekend home

We spent almost every weekend of the summer away, and I want very much to catch up here on all our adventures, but first let me just celebrate a weekend home for once.

We rescued our house from what appeared to be a clothes dryer explosion coupled with the mess makings of a dozen or so toddlers and a mountain of junk mail to make you think we were saving kindling for the winter or something.

We (meaning Ben) painted a wall of wood paneling in our bedroom.  I said I was going to paint the cracks white.  I started working on it during nap today; in the short time while both boys were sleeping I was able to paint 2 3/4 lines out of 23 or so.  More bad news: a second coat will definitely be necessary.  Is all this painting worth my time?  I'm having serious doubts.

But anyway, since our bedroom furniture's all wonky and the air's filled with hazardous fumes, we spent our weekend home sleeping in the living room on the pull out couch, with our air mattress on top.  Gotta admit, it's kinda fun.  Especially for Bobby.  He's loving snuggles in bed watching TV.  We just discovered a new series on Netflix -- Busytown Mysteries -- and Bub's obsessed.  He's exactly like me and Ben when we have a new show, wanting to just keep watching episode after episode.  Ok, let's be honest.  It's not just Bob.  It's Owie too.  We need to finish up this painting project pretty soon before the tv addiction gets out of hand.

The other thing we accomplished this weekend: an impromptu family photo.  This may be the last one we get before Christmas, so I have to save the best ones for our card, but here's a preview...

my hoodie is new and was almost free because my mother in law used my zulily referral link; thanks, chris!

We had lots of cute downtime, including...

brother bath

and a new game: pet pit

Oh, and I know you want poop updates, so here's one: Owen switched to solidish poops on Saturday.

That's our weekend.  It was lovely.  Hope yours was too.

labor day at tiny gram's

We spent Labor Day with my cousin Mary Jo and her family at Tiny Gram's house.  Some pics for family enjoyment...

thanks, simone, for bringing the toys and puzzles!

owie saying goodbye to scarlett...

... with a big old hug

I took lots more photos of Scarlett because she's the littlest and gets all the attention.  You can see some of them here.

We don't see everyone all that often, and Bobby usually takes a while to warm up, but he has fun observing and doing his own thing.  Later this night I mentioned Scarlett and he said, "Yeah, Stah-wett.  Isn't she tute?  But, too bad I didn't hold her."  He likes people more than he lets on sometimes.  And I think that's fine.  He can be reserved if he wants to be.  But we do need to keep working on "being nice" and sharing and whatnot.

A random day out of many, many good days.

Goodnight, folks.

aaron and christina's wedding at the lace factory

so many things to catch up on it's not even funny.

how about a little quick one from three (!?) weekends ago... aaron & christina's wedding!

the new mr. and mrs. d are awesome because: 1. their wedding was super fun.  2. they let our kids crash it.  3. as newlyweds they've already spent a weekend in the berkshires; classy.

shut up and show us the pics, you're thinking.  or i'm just saying.

trolley transport from reception site to wedding ceremony and back = happy pup

outdoor ceremony + new toys = happy pups

i'm in love with this shot of four of aaron's cousins...

gorgeous school served as the backdrop for the ceremony...

so... if you're an avid bob follower you might recognize bob's getup from easter a year and a half ago.  yeah, he doesn't get out that often i guess and he hasn't grown a whole lot bigger.  it started as: we'll just try it out and what do you know, the shirt fits; then: the tie's not so bad but the hat will be too small; to finally: bob insists on wearing the hat also.... and we thought he was the bomb regardless but in the pictures it's easy to see how badly he needs new dress attire.

Before we went into the Lace Factory for the reception we walked across a little road to a train station, or platform more likely, and happened upon this beauty.

Bob was super excited to see the Little Red Caboose that saved the train.

Some photographer scouting the location asked if we wanted her to take our picture; I'll rarely say no to that.  The kids are like, who is this lady?

A story: that necklace I'm wearing above was Gram's, and while we were at the wedding Owen pulled at it and broke it.  I was sad and Bob could immediately tell; he leaned over and put his arm around me and patted my back and said a bunch of nice things like, "I'm sowwy your netwace bwote, mom.  It's awwight.  Are you otay, mom?" and on and on, kissing me and looking at me lovingly.  My heart was so warmed by my boy's sensitivity that I almost didn't even care about the necklace.  (don't worry; i have all the pieces; it's fixable i think.)

Thanks to a new Captain America toy, the Peanut Shell sling, a fun indoor/outdoor venue, and a laid back bride and groom and family, we were able to stay for most of the festivities and had a really great time.  For a night we were cool again!

Thanks, A&C!
